Standard-size product selection

Common Metric Wire Thread Insert Sizes for Bulk Orders

Select the finished screw-thread designation first, followed by the insert length, material, free-running or locking type, and installation style. The metric examples below are widely used industry designations for quoting wire thread inserts; a listed size does not imply every configuration is held in stock.

Swipe horizontally to compare metric thread sizes and nominal lengths.

The 1.5D values are nominal installed length references (1.5 × screw diameter), not free-state coil dimensions. Fine metric pitches and other D-lengths may require a separate specification. Verify drawings, insert type, STI tooling compatibility and final acceptance requirements before production.

Metric inserts

Coarse and drawing-specified fine pitches for approved finished screw threads.

UNC / UNF inserts

For example, 10-24 UNC, 10-32 UNF, 1/4-20 UNC and 1/4-28 UNF; confirm TPI and thread class.

Custom wire inserts

Customer drawings, special lengths, materials and bulk or private-label packaging can be reviewed for quotation.

Ordering example: “M8 × 1.25, 1.5D (12 mm nominal), free-running, tanged, specified stainless steel grade, 5,000 pieces, bulk pack.” For inch threads, replace the metric designation with the full UNC or UNF thread and threads-per-inch requirement.

Wire Thread Insert Types

Choose the Correct Wire Thread Insert Configuration

A wire insert specification normally requires two separate decisions: first choose the functional behavior, then choose the installation design.

1. Choose the Function

Free-Running

For applications requiring normal mating-screw movement without an additional screw-locking feature.

View free-running inserts →
Screw-Locking

For reviewed applications requiring additional screw-retention behavior.

View screw-locking inserts →

2. Choose the Installation Design

Tanged

Uses a driving tang during installation and may require tang removal after installation.

View tanged inserts →
Tangless

Uses a tangless installation interface and requires compatible tangless tooling.

View tangless inserts →

Typical Configuration Combinations

Function and installation design are separate variables. A complete wire insert selection may combine them as follows.

Free-Running + Tanged
Free-Running + Tangless
Screw-Locking + Tanged
Screw-Locking + Tangless
Important: “Wire thread insert” alone is not a complete part specification. Always confirm thread standard, nominal size, pitch or TPI, insert length, function, installation design and material.

Metric and Inch Product Range

Metric, UNC and UNF Wire Thread Inserts

Thread standard is one of the first purchasing decisions. Coarse and fine threads must match the mating fastener, STI tap and complete installation system.

Metric Wire Thread Inserts

Metric coarse and reviewed fine-pitch requirements can be quoted by nominal size, pitch, D-length, insert function and installation design.

View metric size chart →

UNC Wire Thread Inserts

Unified coarse inserts are specified by inch thread designation, TPI, length, function, installation design and material requirement.

View UNC size reference →

UNF Wire Thread Inserts

Unified fine inserts require the exact fine-thread designation and matching STI tooling. Do not substitute UNC components for UNF requirements.

Need exact dimensions? Refer to the Thread Insert Size Chart when selecting nominal size, pitch and insert length for your assembly.

Size and Specification

How Wire Thread Inserts Are Specified

Nominal screw size alone is not enough to select a wire insert. The full specification controls the installed thread, insert depth, tooling compatibility and quotation.

Specification What to Confirm Why It Matters Example
Thread Standard Metric, UNC, UNF or another required system. Defines mating screw geometry and the matched STI thread. Metric
Nominal Size Screw diameter or nominal thread designation. Determines the finished internal thread size. M8
Pitch or TPI Metric pitch or inch threads per inch. Prevents coarse- and fine-thread mismatch. 1.25 mm
Insert Length 1D, 1.5D, 2D, 2.5D, 3D or another approved length. Must suit available hole depth and required engagement. 1.5D
Functional Type Free-running or screw-locking. Determines whether additional screw-retention behavior is required. Free-running
Installation Design Tanged or tangless. Changes the installation interface and process. Tanged
Material Base alloy, international grade / UNS number and any required material condition. Material must match the application and purchasing specification. SS 301
Quantity Sample quantity and expected production or repeat-order quantity. Supports the correct commercial and packaging review. 5,000 pcs

FAQ

Wire Thread Insert Questions

What is a wire thread insert?

A wire thread insert is a helically formed insert installed into a prepared STI thread. It creates or restores the internal thread used by the mating screw or fastener.

What are wire thread inserts used for?

They are commonly used for damaged-thread repair, thread reinforcement and repeated assembly applications where a durable internal threaded interface is required.

What is the difference between free-running and screw-locking wire inserts?

Free-running inserts allow normal screw movement. Screw-locking inserts are specified where additional screw retention is required. The locking requirement should be reviewed with the mating fastener and operating conditions.

What is the difference between tanged and tangless wire thread inserts?

Tanged inserts use a driving tang during installation. Tangless inserts use a compatible tangless installation interface and do not require a break-off driving tang.

What sizes are available for wire thread inserts?

Wire inserts are specified by thread standard, nominal size, pitch or TPI and insert length. See the Thread Insert Size Chart for the dedicated size reference.

Which materials can be specified for wire thread inserts?

Customers can request stainless steel grades including 201, 301, 304 and 316, as well as special materials such as Inconel X-750, Nitronic 60, Nimonic 90, phosphor bronze and other customer-specified alloys. Supply is quoted against the exact grade, insert design, quantity and acceptance requirements.

Can Taiyi manufacture Inconel X-750 wire thread inserts?

We accept Inconel X-750 (Alloy X-750 / UNS N07750) wire thread insert inquiries for custom production. Send your drawing, required material condition, thread size, insert length and quantity. Wire sourcing, forming, samples, inspections and any documentation are confirmed for the specific order.

Can you source a customer-specified special alloy wire?

Taiyi can evaluate sourcing of specified international alloy wire for custom helical insert projects. Feasibility depends on the exact alloy, required wire form, dimensions, treatments and product acceptance criteria.

Are custom alloy wire thread inserts supplied with material certificates?

Tell us which documents and traceability level your purchase requires. Certificate availability and any material or finished-insert standard compliance must be confirmed before an order is accepted; a material designation alone is not proof of certification.

Do wire thread inserts require an STI tap?

The receiving thread for a wire insert is an STI thread. The STI tap must match the insert thread system and specification. A standard tap should not be assumed to be interchangeable with the required STI tap.

What information should I send for a wire thread insert quotation?

Send the thread standard, nominal size, pitch or TPI, insert length, free-running or locking requirement, tanged or tangless design, material, application, quantity and packaging requirement.

Can I buy wire thread inserts in bulk or private-label packaging?

Yes. Bulk inserts, refill packs, distributor packaging and private-label programs can be reviewed against the required insert specification, quantity, artwork, barcode and packaging format.

Can wire thread inserts be supplied to a specific industry standard?

The required standard must be identified before quotation. Send the applicable DIN, MS, NAS/NASM, BS, customer drawing or other controlled specification together with any material, inspection and certificate requirements.

Are Taiyi wire inserts official HELICOIL products?

No. Taiyi supplies independent generic helical wire thread inserts and related thread-repair products. HELICOIL and Heli-Coil are trademarks of their respective owners.
